PT-141 or Bremelanotide is a research peptide that is currently being studied for its potential use in treating sexual dysfunction in both men and women. It was derived from Melanotan 2, a synthetic version of a peptide hormone that naturally occurs in the body and stimulates melanogenesis. This hormone, known as alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone or MSH, has various effects on the body, including the stimulation of certain melanocortin receptors. PT-141 has been shown in studies to activate the melanocortin receptors MC1R and MC4R, resulting in an increase in sexual desire without affecting skin tanning.

PT-141 has demonstrated effectiveness in treating sexual dysfunction in both male and female rats, with male rats responding at lower doses than females. Melanotan 2, the peptide from which PT-141 was derived, was originally tested as a sunless tanning agent and was found to have unexpected side effects, including sexual arousal and spontaneous erections in male volunteers.
